THE FIRST ELK
The Elk's Head of Huittinen was found in a field by a farmer 1903. At the moment it is in the collections of Finnish National Museum. There is an exellent copy in the Huittinen Museum. The elk hammer is approximately 7000 years old.

History of the Second Elk

In the autumn 1998 Hannu Aaltonen the leading person of the Streetgallery organisation of Huittinen asked me to make a plan for a permanent environmental work of art to be placed in the center of Huittinen city area.

Huittinen is a small but bustling and independent town in southern Finland, about in the middle of the Helsinki - Turku - Tampere-triangle. Almost all I knew about the town was "Huittinen's Elk Head" called ancient hammer. So I had to beguin to learn more about the location. I visited Huittinen several times, trying to understand the nature of the people and the environment. In the beginning I tried to avoid the elk motif as maybe too trivial but after some months I realised that it is a fabulous symbol of developement of the area. Also the approaching new millenium forced me to thoughts about the Second Elk; Frankly the temptation to have a post on the same continuity with the artist who made the mythical first elk's head almost 7000 years ago was very heavy reason for me to make an decision to create The Second Elk

The Second Elk is 10 meter high and it's "wingspan" is 5 meter. I hope the images below tells the rest of the story.
